FREE-- Wild Life of Your Home Kit
-- Not sure what will be in the kit, but I found this some where. Please read before you sign up.
Moving Beyond Belly Button Biodiversity…we will study the species living with you on your body but also in the other biomes of YOUR household. If you want to know who is hiding in your refrigerator or mating in the pillow where you rest your head, we can help you.
What you can do (AKA, This Old House Mite)—We need volunteers to take samples of their houses, very simple samples. We will send you a sampling kit (composed of vials, cotton swabs, directions and some questions). You then take the vials and swab dust from key biomes of your home, including your door frame (inside and out), your refrigerator, your couch cushions and, well, you. You will then send your sample in and we will study the species present in the sample. We will find (it is nearly a guarantee) bacteria, archaea, protists, pollen and fungus in your house and on you, but we might also find more. You will then be able to compare your results to those of more urban and rural houses across North America (and, as we expand, the world), an endeavor we will help you with, but we also hope to engage you in helping us with.
The catch (You Need to Hurry)—The catch is our current funding will allow only ten houses to be sampled per state, five rural and five urban. We will divvy up kits to houses within states on a first come first serve basis. If you are not among the first ten people to sign up in a state, we hope to soon make possible a service wherein you can donate the cost of a kit + the genetic work and we can provide you results for your specific house. Note: We would love samples of traditional “rustic” homes, whether thatch, mud or something else, without AC/Heat and will target such homes in particular regions (e.g., Ethiopia) but will accept samples from them from anywhere.
